When it comes to personal care and beauty products I tend to go the all natural route. I try to stay away from relying on harsh chemicals for my daily routines. But sometimes we need a little more of a boost in our smile game than brushing with organic bentonite clay can give you, you feel me? A lot of people are hiding their beautiful smiles due to being self conscious and as someone who never had braces as a kid I have been one of those people! I’m learning that there’s a lot that goes into taking care of your smile – it’s not just about seeing the dentist every six months for a check-up. That’s why I’ve gathered together some hacks to help those of you who want to invest in making your smile the best it can be.

Identify problem areas
The first step to achieving a flawless smile is to think about what problem areas your mouth has. For instance, perhaps you have an overbite or, maybe your teeth have begun to yellow due to drinking too much coffee or perhaps your teeth have patches of stains on them. The fact is that if you’re going to fix any issues with your smile, first you need to identify what these problems are – you may find doing so easier by speaking with your dentist to identify any potential issues.
What’s your ideal outcome?
Once you’ve determined where your problem areas are, the next step is to think about how you would like to fix those problems. The good news is that whatever the problem – be it an overbite, teeth that are wonky, or stained and yellow teeth – advancements in dentistry mean that cosmetic treatments are relatively quick and painless. If you’re not happy with how your teeth look, the best thing that you can do is speak with your dentist for a referral to a cosmetic dentist, whether that’s to discuss straightening teeth with clear aligners or having your teeth whitened, a cosmetic dentist should be able to help. Just make sure to research any cosmetic dentist that you opt to use, to ensure that their work meets your expectations. Personally, I’m dying to try clear aligners and that’s one of my goals for 2020, no more excuses! Gone are the days where you have to cut up the inside of your mouth with metal for straight teeth.
Think about long-term maintenance
It’s all well and good having a tooth problem fixed, such as having your teeth straightened or whitened, but there’s also the concern about long-term care to think about. You need to make sure that you ask your dentist how to maintain your new, brighter, straighter smile in the future. For instance, with many clear teeth aligners, a retainer needs to be worn at night to maintain the structure and integrity of each tooth’s position in the mouth. So it’s worth speaking to your dentist about the maintenance aspect of things for the long-term, allowing you to learn what steps you will need to take to protect your smile.
